SMLC7004. Thesis Writing (The Humanities and Area Studies)


This course will provide students with knowledge of the core components of conceptualizing, organizing and writing a graduate level research thesis in the humanities and Area Studies..

Objectives

This course aims to

  1. Familiarize students to the basic structure, format and style expected of a top quality PhD or Masters thesis.
  2. Enable students to make informed judgments about data selection and appropriate marshaling of evidence.
  3. Enhance students capacity to develop a defendable hypothesis.

Course Syllabus

The topics covered include:

  1. Knowledge of the range of common thesis structures.
  2. Knowledge of core thesis components (e.g. Abstracts, Acknowledgements, Table of Contents, Appendices, Reference Matter).
  3. Identifying a sustainable and achievable research topic.
  4. Forming a hypothesis.
  5. Identifying appropriate types of evidence.
  6. Developing a defendable argument.
  7. Accurate acknowledgement of sources.

Mode of Assessment

Assessment will be by coursework on a Pass/Fail basis.
