When Did They Decide? Understanding and Teaching the Development of the Final Solution

Dr David Silberklang

Arts Academic Conference Room, Rm 436, 4/F

Did the Nazis' intend the annihilation of European Jewry from the outset?
If not, how and why did their policies evolve? Who made the decisions?
What sources do we use to teach about such complex processes?

In addressing these questions, this workshop will refer to German documents; Jewish diaries and reports; and Polish and Lithuanian diaries -- as well suggestions for using these documents in the classroom.

In addition to his role at Yad Vashem, Dr Silberklang teaches at Hebrew University, Tel Aviv University, and Haifa University. His new book, Gates of Tears: The Holocaust in the Lublin District was published last year.

This workshop is open to secondary school teachers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and university educators.
