Sex and the Founding Fathers: The American Quest for a Relatable Past
Prof. Thomas Foster Professor of History at DePaul University and author of Sex and the Founding Fathers (Temple 2014)
This talk looks how American popular culture has remembered U.S. Founder George Washington’s private life from the late eighteenth century to today. As the “father of the nation,” Washington has long invoked a masculine ideal. But that image has also changed over time to suit American popular tastes – and has been complicated by his position as father within his own household.
