Screening and Round Table Discussion: Holocaust Impiety: Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds

Date: 15 April 2014

School of Modern Languages and Cultures HKU cordially invites you to attend the Screening and Round Table Discussion:

Holocaust Impiety: Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds

Please join us for a screening of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and subsequent round table discussion featuring Dr. Matthew Boswell (author of Holocaust Impiety in Literature, Popular Music and Film, 2011) and Dr. Stefan Auer (“The Holocaust as Fiction: From Andrzej Wajda’s Korczak to Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds,” in: Gwenda Tavan (ed.), State of the Nation, 2013).

Ever since 1945 the question of fictionalizing the Holocaust has been debated. Some of the most prominent thinkers, writers, and filmmakers such as Theodor W. Adorno, Elie Wiesel, and Claude Lanzmann have spoken out against mixing fiction and the Holocaust. What happens then if one of the more controversial of Hollywood’s directors takes on the subject to make a genre film? Drs. Boswell and Auer will present their views on Tarantino’s effort and discuss with you the implications of representing the Holocaust seven decades after the liberation of the death camps.

Tuesday, April 15
Run Run Shaw Tower, Room 4.34

Screening at 4:30 pm:
Inglourious Basterds, 2009, dir. Quentin Tarantino

Discussion at 7:15 pm
Speakers: Dr. Matthew Boswell (University of Leeds) and Dr. Stefan Auer (HKU)
Chair: Dr. Tim Gruenewald (HKU)
