SMLC Research Colloquium:

The role of human rights NGOs in foreign policy decision-making

Mr. Milton Poon
Mphil Candidate (European Studies)

Date: 23 April 2012 (Monday)
Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Venue: KK Leung Room 1105

Abstract:
Foreign policies of the European Union and its member states towards China in the last two decades have been characterised by a competition between human rights concerns and other foreign policy aims such as economic and security interests. Non-state actors such as human rights NGOs have been using its privileged power of information in becoming a force in the foreign policy decision-making process. Served as an insight for further research on human rights NGOs role in the above-mentioned process, this paper looks at the origin of their power and how they have interacted with states and multilateral institutions such as the United Nations previously concerning human rights issues.

* All students taking the Research Colloquium course must attend. Other staff and students are also welcome.
