Seminar: China’s Road Ahead: Cultural and Political Choices

Date: 11 April 2012

School of Modern Languages and Cultures has the pleasure of inviting you to the following seminar:

China’s Road Ahead: Cultural and Political Choices

Professor Torbjörn Lodén

Date: Wednesday 11 April
Time: 4.30-6pm
Venue: KK Leung Building Room 813
Language: English

Abstract:
In this seminar, Torbjörn Lodén will discuss China’s future in terms of four major choices: (1) Continued Westernization or back to Chinese tradition? (2) Continued falsification of history or Vergangheitsbewältigung? (3) Continued one-party rule or transition to democracy? (4) Cooperation or confrontation with the outside world? He will place these ‘choices’ – a term he uses to avoid a misleading historical determinism – in a historical context. Specifically, he will try to identify a number of factors, which will be decisive in dealing with these choices, but he will also discuss them as issues of global relevance and concern and in terms of basic human values.

About the speaker:
Torbjörn Lodén is professor of Chinese language and culture at Stockholm University, member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities and Director of the Stockholm Confucius Institute. In 2011-2012, he is a visiting professor at City University of Hong Kong. His main scholarly interests are in the fields of Chinese intellectual history and literature. He has published several books and more than 150 scholarly and popular articles.
