Seminar: Globalising Chinese Gender and Masculinity

Date: 12 March 2012

The HKU Women's Studies Research Centre invites you to attend the following seminar being held as part of its upcoming Spring Week Events.

Globalising Chinese Gender and Masculinity

Speaker: Professor Kam Louie, Dean, Faculty of Arts

Moderator: Dr Travis Kong, Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences

Time: Monday 12 March 2012 at 12:30-2:00 pm
Location: Main Building, Room 151

"China's Rise" has become a much-used phrase in recent years. Professor Louie will explore how this perceived "rise" affects the spread of Chinese masculinity ideals. I hope to show that these ideals have transformed in the new world order, and China's use of soft power to influence others has also influenced the way femininity and masculinity are constructed internationally.

Professor Kam Louie has written extensively on Chinese masculinity and is author of the foundational work in the field, Theorizing Chinese Masculinity (Cambridge UP 2002). Dr Travis Kong brings to the discussion his wide expertise on gender and sexuality studies with his latest book Chinese Males Homosexualities (Routledge 2010) providing a cutting-edge study of Chinese masculinity in a global context.
