Norwegian Jazz Night with Excess Luggage

Date: 14 March 2012

The Swedish Programme, The School of Modern Languages and Cultures has the pleasure of inviting you to the following event:

Norwegian Jazz Night with Excess Luggage

Date: 14 March, 2012
Venue: Global Lounge, HKU

Master Class
Time: 4 pm - 5 pm

Jazz Performance
Time: 6 pm - 8 pm

This Norwegian trio is based upon the uncommon line up Hammond B3 organ, piano and drums. We were all fascinated by the sound of these instruments, and thought it was too bad this lineup was not more common.

Capable of combining the groovy feel of the organtrio with the harmonic and melodic style of the piano trio, this should form the base for the perfect trio. Could make you wonder why this hasn’t been the most used trio lineup. But the answer came soon too us: Excess Luggage! The music is based upon strong melodies played with an open mind, lots of energy and an well developed interplay between three musician that has knows each other for many years. The tunes are a mix of original compositions developed for this trio, and arrangements of well known standards.

About The Musicians:
Vigleik Storaas:
One of the most important piano players in Norway. Has received two norwegian grammys for his releases with his own trio.

Steinar Nickelsen:
Was elected «Young Norwegian Jazzmusician of the year» in 2002 with the trio «SOLID!» and got many gigs in Norway and Europe after this. «SOLID!» also won the Getxo competition in Spain in 2003.

Håkon Mjåset Johansen:
Started early to establish himself as one of the leading Norwegian drummers. The trio “Urban Connection” was elected “Young Norwegian Jazz musician of the year” in 1998.
