Talk: Archipelagos of Faith - American Religion; Chinese Religion

Date: 24 November 2011

School of Modern Languages and Cultures has the pleasure of inviting you to the following talk:

Archipelagos of Faith: American Religion; Chinese Religion

Professor Richard Madsen
The University of California, San Diego

Date: 24 November, 2011 (Thursday)
Time: 4:30 - 6:00 pm
Venue: KK1101, K.K.Leung Building, HKU

Despite the tremendous diversity in religious practice in both America and China, there is a distinctive logic at work in each society that provides some commonality in the midst of diversity.  In the USA, there is a logic of separation and exclusion; in China a logic of addition and inclusion.  Both systems produce characteristic patterns of tension as well as possibilities for harmony.

Richard Madsen (Ph.D. Harvard 1977) is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of California, San Diego. He has written 12 books on various aspects of religion and morality in both America and China. His most recent book is Democracy’s Dharma: Religious Renaissance and Political Development in Taiwan.

All are welcome.
