Miss Ruoxing Wong, Mphil Candidate, Japanese Studies

Abstracts: It is generally accepted that boys’ love (BL) is originated from the Japanese comics. The phrase boy’s love first appeared as a proper noun in the comics at an approximate time of 1966 in Japan. The growth of BL manga in Japan could be divided into 3 periods, all these periods are related to the characteristics of the times. The 1990s saw the emergence of new type of BL comics, namely Tanbi, which can be attributed the same meaning as aestheticism. In fact, Tanbi is the most important part of BL manga also the core values of mordern BL manga. The presentation will discuss a set of research directions to understand why BL manga become a magnetic type of manga to the readers even no doubt heterosexuality and what will it lead to with that a lot of influence surroundings.

All students taking the Research Colloquium course must attend. Other staff and students are also welcome.
