Workshops with renowned German graphic novelist Reinhard Kleist

The German Programme of the School of Modern Languages & Cultures is proud to present two workshops with renowned German graphic novelist Reinhard Kleist.

German Graphic Novels - An introduction by Reinhard Kleist

Reinhard Kleist will talk about how he develops new projects - from the first idea to the finished graphic novel. He will also give an overview of German graphic novels today.

Time: 1pm – 3pm
Venue: EH101, Eliot Hall
Language: German (supplemented by English if necessary)

Participants will work together to create a short comic and discuss details such as the plot, the characters, and how to structure a picture.

About the speaker:
Born in 1970, Reinhard Kleist studied graphic design at the Fachhochschule in Muenster, Germany. Since 1996 he has working in Berlin as a graphic novelist. Reinhard Kleist´s artwork has been featured in various books, commercials, CD booklets, films and TV productions.

His graphic novels have been translated into various languages and have won numerous awards in Germany as well as abroad. In 1996, he received the prestigious “Max und Moritz” Award for “Lovecraft” and again in 2008 for “Cash - I see a darkness”, a graphic novel about country legend Johnny Cash, which also won the German Book Fair Award at the German Book Fair in Frankfurt 2007 (Best German Comic).

In 2008, Reinhard Kleist spent a month in Cuba to do research for his latest project. The resulting graphic novel (“Havanna”) was also nominated for the German Book Fair Award in 2009 (Best Comic).
