Research Colloquium Spring 2010

Man in the modern world: the paradoxical existence in the works of Italo Calvino

Ms Jenny Wong
Mphil. Candidate (European Studies) HKU

Date: 11 May 2010 (Tuesday)
Time: 16:00 to 17:00
Venue: KK Room 813

Abstract
The world in the age of technocapitalism, as perceived by the Italian writer Italo Calvino, has been characterized by mechanization and alienation and become increasingly “dishuman”. The central aim of this research is to examine the nature of beings in our modern world as manifested in Calvino’s works, with a focus on the trilogy “Our Ancestors” and the posthumous novel “Mr Palomar”. After analyzing the modern conditions of man and society, the thesis would proceed to interpret and question the key ideas of Calvino: man as a paradoxical existence and life as a series of binary dilemma, and ultimately his proposed path to the rediscovery of the complete Self.
