Talk: Getting into Synch with the World- Time and the Global in the Cinema of Jia Zhangke

Date: 28 March 2008 (Friday)

As part of its ongoing Modern China Studies Seminar Series, the School of Modern Languages and Cultures is pleased to present a talk

by:

Professor Chris Berry
Goldsmiths College, University of London

entitled

'GETTING INTO SYNCH WITH THE WORLD: TIME AND THE GLOBAL IN THE CINEMA OF JIA ZHANGKE'

Date: March 28, 2008 (Friday)
Time: 4pm to 6pm
Venue: S325, Meng Wah Complex

Abstract:
In recent years, Jia Zhangke has established himself as the pre-eminent post-1989 Chinese film director on the international film circuit. This presentation focuses on time as both a formal feature and a theme in Jia's films. It argues that in both ways this is his particular version of 'getting into synch with the world': His slow cinema, addressing the Chinese experience of globalization as one of temporal juncture and disjuncture, has put him at the cutting edge of film festival cinema.
